Barley Street Tavern is a last call bar — a great place to throw the last one back, wrap a few hugs around old friends, and sing along with the final band. A delayed flight allowed me to see only the last band at the OEAA showcase July 8. Alt-country rockers The Big Deep were keeping eyes and ears awake with their lively show.
Tightly packed on the small stage, the band ripped a set of fun...

Here’s the second in a series of One-Take-Wonderful videos I shot. Andrew Janousek plays in Rock Paper Dynamite who you should see anyways, but here its just Andrew playing a simple song for you.

Sometimes Ingrained is simply me, a camera, and my trusty audio recorder. I was wondering Benson looking for something to shoot and walked into the Barley once again to find Andrew Ancona of Noah’s Ark Was A Spaceship playing solo. The dark night was perfect for the sad story of the song Dark Moon. Enjoy this little nugget.

In continuing to post Ingrained videos I wondered why no one had seen this video. Seems with a mis-click I had left this poor video unviewable by any but me. So this is a filmflam exclusive of Merry Christmas in Outer Space by Kyle Harvey.

Wow this turned out great! Check this video of Phantasmagoria steadily rocking this hit known as Bats. Listen for all the great samples and found sounds. Hypnotic. Shot in one take on a dark Detroit neighborhood street for Love Drunk tour.

This video is blowing up. Check out Philly punkers, the Menzingers rock a one-take in the Ava House, an old DIY space in South Philly. This is part of the Love Drunk tour I’ve been helping with, 17 bands, 15 days, 13 cities all for the love of video and music making.

Lastly, fresh from mixing and mastering a new album with Doug Van Sloun of Focus Mastering, Poison Control Center ripped through a new set of singles and classics. As the night progressed and drinks were flowing, a frisky fan kept inviting himself to the mic to promote what I guessing was a sad after-show party featuring professional crying games (did anyone go? I would love to hear about...

My friend Django who does Love Drunk also plays in Down With The Ship, a stellar roots rocking band. Normally, I shoot very naturally but I was playing with an effect earlier int he day and decided to go with it. Tell me what you think?

“Are they reliving the past or projecting a hazy future?” I asked myself as NAWAS settled into their album release show Feb. 25 at the Waiting Room Lounge. Out of the feedback, they coaxed one of my favorite songs, “Warm Eyes,” off their Slumber Party Records release, Hanga-Fang. It’s such a freeing song — a base of happy grunge, indie pop experimentation, and echoing...

Here is another Ingrained video with instrumental rock band The Answer Team. Less nerdy than most post-rock instrumental bands, these guys are huge on melodic swaying hooks. Enjoy!

Here’s the next Ingrained video with Irkutsk (don’t even try to pronounce it) at HearNebraska’s benefit show at O’Leavers in Omaha. Somewhere between punk, prog rock, and post-rock, Irkutsk is truely its own country of sounds, maybe even continent. Enjoy!

I just realized I never posted this kickass video of Kyle Harvey playing his Christmas From Outer Space CD live at The Barley Street Tavern. People came dressed as alien and spaceships and Kyle who normally is very minimalist dressed up in a full space suit. He filled the room with lazers and balloons and hip-hop drum beats under his sparse guitar playing. It was a night to remember and I’m...

Love Punch-Drunk Style
Watching Punch Drunk Love (loving the PTA). If this was a manual for long-term relationships, you would learn how to: Make a romantic and daring move to win the girl’s heart: √ Be a classy dresser: √ Vacation in Hawaii: √ Be awkward, a mumbler, and a outright liar: √ Take out your rage on the nearest bathroom or glass window: √ Get lucky with sadomasochistic pillow-talk: √

Why I liked The Social Network →
The ending of this review is why I liked the Social Network so well:
“Many critics have compared this picture to “Citizen Kane.” But I was reminded of the famous last scene in “The Searchers,” in which the John Wayne character is unable to join the social bliss he has created. The character gaps that propel some people to do something remarkable can’t be overcome simply because they have...
